Sanding Block Guide: Rigid vs Flexible Blocks for Flat, Curved & Contoured Surfaces
· Kenrika Supplies
A practical comparison of rigid-style, flexible and multi-profile hand sanding blocks for flat, curved and contoured surface preparation.
A sanding block does more than give you something to hold. Its shape and flexibility affect how the abrasive follows the surface and how pressure is spread across the work area. A block that feels right on a flat panel may be awkward on a curve, while a very flexible block may not give the same support on a flatter section.

Kenrika currently stocks three useful approaches: a controlled fast-fit hand block, a flexible segmented block and a six-piece kit with multiple profiles.
Sanding block choice: the quick guide
- Flat and general hand sanding: a firm, ergonomic block such as the YSB-1 is a straightforward starting point.
- Curves and contours: a flexible segmented block such as the YSB-FLEX can follow shaped surfaces more easily.
- Mixed shapes and bodywork: a multi-profile kit gives you several block forms for flat, curved and contoured areas.
What is the YSB-1 sanding block best for?
The Yellow Fast Fit Sanding Block YSB-1 is a lightweight ergonomic hand block with a contoured grip and a hook-and-loop fast-fit base for compatible abrasive sheets.
It is designed for controlled hand sanding and surface preparation across automotive, marine, decorating and general workshop applications. Its simple hand-block format makes it useful when you want consistent support and a comfortable grip during general preparation.
When should you use a flexible sanding block?
The YSB-FLEX Flexible Fast Fit Sanding Block uses a segmented body that bends to follow curved, shaped and contoured surfaces more easily than a rigid block.
That makes it particularly useful on curved panels and other areas where forcing a firm block to stay flat would reduce contact with the surface. The base is also hook-and-loop / fast-fit for compatible abrasive sheets.
Why use a multi-profile sanding block kit?
A single block shape cannot match every surface. The Starchem 6 Piece Sanding Block Kit provides a selection of different profiles for flat, curved and contoured work and comes in a moulded carry case.
It is intended for automotive bodywork and paint preparation, marine refinishing and repair, general workshop sanding and surface finishing. Hook-and-loop abrasive attachment is provided on applicable blocks.
Abrasive sheets or discs are not stated as included unless shown with the supplied kit, so choose compatible abrasives separately.
Does the sanding block determine the grit?
No. The block controls how you support and present the abrasive to the surface; the abrasive grade controls how coarse or fine the cutting action is. You still need to choose a grit that suits the material-removal and finishing stage.
See our sandpaper grit guide for a practical explanation of P40, P80, P120, P180, P240 and P320.
Can the same block be used for marine, decorating and workshop work?
The blocks in our range are used across several preparation environments, but the substrate and coating system still determine the correct abrasive and working method. A block can help you follow the shape of a surface; it does not make every abrasive suitable for every material.
For marine preparation, read our marine hand-sanding workflow guide. For decorating preparation, see the paint scraper and surface-preparation guide.
Choosing between the three
If most of your work is straightforward hand sanding, start with the YSB-1. If the surface has repeated curves or contours, the YSB-FLEX gives you more ability to follow the shape. If you regularly move between different profiles, the Starchem six-piece kit gives you a broader selection in one case.
