Marine Surface Preparation: A Practical Hand-Sanding Workflow Before Refinishing
· Kenrika Supplies
A practical hand-sanding workflow for marine surface preparation, from assessing flat and curved areas to selecting blocks, abrasives and a sensible grit progression.
Marine refinishing starts with understanding the surface in front of you. Flat areas, curves and tight contours do not all respond the same way to hand sanding, and the best sanding block for one section may not be the best choice for the next.

This guide focuses on hand-sanding and surface-preparation tools from Kenrika's Marine range. This guide explains how to use that type of equipment as part of a careful preparation workflow before the next coating or finishing stage.
1. Identify the surface and the job before sanding
Before choosing a block or abrasive, identify what you are working on, what material or existing coating is present and what the next finishing system requires. Unknown or older coatings may need additional assessment before they are disturbed.
Always follow the coating, substrate and abrasive manufacturer's preparation instructions where they specify a required method or grit sequence.
2. Separate flat areas from curves and contours
A useful way to plan hand sanding is to divide the work into surface shapes. Broad, relatively flat areas can benefit from a supportive hand block that spreads pressure. Curved or shaped sections need a block that can maintain contact without forcing the surface into a flat profile.
The YSB-1 Fast Fit Sanding Block is an ergonomic hand block for controlled general preparation. The YSB-FLEX Flexible Sanding Block uses a segmented body designed to follow curved and contoured surfaces more easily.
3. Use a multi-profile kit when the shape keeps changing
Marine surfaces can move between flats, curves and smaller profiles in the same job. If one block shape cannot match the range of areas you need to prepare, the Starchem 6 Piece Sanding Block Kit provides several profiles in one moulded case.
The kit is intended for flat, curved and contoured surface work and is listed for marine refinishing and repair as well as automotive and general workshop preparation.
4. Match the abrasive grit to the stage of preparation
The block and the abrasive do different jobs. The block supports the abrasive and helps it follow the surface; the grit determines how coarse or fine the sanding action is.
Start only as coarse as the job requires, then refine the surface through appropriate grades rather than expecting one abrasive to handle every stage. Our P40-P320 sandpaper grit guide explains the role of coarse, intermediate and finer grades in general surface preparation.
The correct finishing grit before a coating should come from the coating manufacturer's technical instructions.
5. Keep pressure controlled
A sanding block is intended to improve control, not to encourage excessive force. Let the abrasive and the shape of the block do the work. Pay particular attention around edges, corners and changes in profile, where concentrated pressure can remove material faster than on a broad flat area.
6. Check the surface as you progress
Preparation is easier to control when you inspect the surface between stages rather than sanding continuously without checking the result. Look for remaining defects, uneven transitions and areas that still need a different block shape or abrasive grade.
7. Remove sanding debris before the next finishing stage
Once the required preparation is complete, remove sanding debris using a method appropriate to the substrate and finishing system, then follow the coating manufacturer's cleaning and application instructions.
Which sanding block should you choose?
For a direct tool comparison, read our rigid vs flexible sanding block guide. In simple terms, the YSB-1 suits controlled general hand sanding, the YSB-FLEX is designed to follow curves and contours, and the Starchem six-piece kit gives you several profiles for mixed-shape work.
