Compare 24mm and 48mm masking tape, work out how many 50m rolls to buy, and check surface suitability before starting your decorating project.

24mm masking tape provides a narrower protective band; 48mm tape provides twice the width. When both rolls are 50 metres long, they cover the same running length of edge. Choose the tape's suitability for your surface first, then choose the width and quantity.

This guide explains the difference between the two widths, a simple way to estimate roll quantities, and the checks to make before ordering. Application and removal instructions depend on the particular tape, paint and surface; follow their manufacturers' guidance rather than a universal rule.

24mm or 48mm masking tape: which width should you choose?

Consider 24mm when a narrower band is enough

A 24mm roll is worth considering where the area you intend to cover is narrow or there is limited space beside an edge. Measure the available space rather than choosing by habit. The tape must still be suitable for the surface underneath it.

Consider 48mm when you need a wider protective band

A 48mm roll gives a broader strip of coverage beside an edge. That can be useful when your masking plan calls for more covered width. It does not automatically make the adhesive stronger, make an unsuitable surface safe to tape, or replace covering the rest of the area that needs protection.

Compare like with like: width is only one specification. Two tapes of the same colour or width may have different intended surfaces, adhesives and removal instructions.

How many 50m rolls of masking tape do you need?

Measure the actual edges you intend to mask. Include separate runs around frames and trim where needed, and count any sections that will need to be masked again during the job.

  1. Add the lengths for each width of tape separately.
  2. Add an allowance appropriate to your job for overlaps, corners, short pieces and re-masking.
  3. Divide each total by the length of one roll.
  4. Round up to a whole number of rolls.

Example: suppose your measured edges total 72 metres and you choose a 10% planning allowance. That gives 72 × 1.10 = 79.2 metres. For 50m rolls, 79.2 ÷ 50 = 1.584, so you would buy two rolls of that width.

The 10% allowance is an illustration, not a rule for every project. Complex shapes or repeated masking may need a different allowance. A 48mm × 50m roll is not a substitute for two 24mm × 50m rolls when you need 100 metres of continuous edge coverage.

Four checks before you buy

  • Surface: identify the material and finish you will tape. Do not assume a general masking tape is suitable for wallpaper, delicate finishes or newly painted surfaces.
  • Coating condition: check the paint manufacturer's requirements before applying tape to a painted surface, and the tape manufacturer's surface restrictions.
  • Environment and duration: check whether the specified tape suits the intended indoor or outdoor use and how long it may remain in place under those conditions.
  • Application and removal: read the instructions for the exact product, including any test-area recommendation. Do not assume one removal time or method applies to every tape and coating.

INDASA masking tape at Kenrika Supplies

Our INDASA MTE-YELLOW Masking Tape listing offers 24mm × 50m and 48mm × 50m variants. Each variant is sold as one individual roll, not a box of rolls.

Choose the width in the product's size selector and use the basket quantity for the number of individual rolls required. Check the live product page for specifications, current price and availability before ordering. A matching width alone is not confirmation that the tape is suitable for your particular surface.

Common masking tape questions

Does a wider roll cover a longer edge?

No. Width and length are separate measurements. Both 24mm × 50m and 48mm × 50m rolls contain 50 metres of tape; the second covers a wider band.

Can I choose masking tape just by its colour?

Use the exact product specifications and intended application, not colour alone. Check surface suitability, conditions of use and the manufacturer's removal guidance.

Should I choose one width for the whole job?

Not necessarily. Measure the different areas you intend to protect. When your plan uses both widths, calculate the roll quantity for each width separately.
