A practical guide to compounding and polishing stages, 150mm threaded foam heads, waffle sponges and backing-pad setups for compatible rotary polishers.

Compounding and polishing are related stages of paintwork correction and finishing, but they do different jobs. Compounding is generally the more corrective stage, while polishing is used to refine the surface and improve the finish. The result depends on the machine, pad, compound or polish, paint condition, speed, pressure and technique rather than the pad alone.

This guide explains the main 150mm machine-polishing options in our current Starchem range and the difference between direct-thread polishing heads and fast-fit sponge-and-backing-pad systems.

Compounding vs polishing: the quick answer

  • Compounding: normally the more corrective stage, used with an appropriate compound and pad when defects or heavier surface correction need to be addressed.
  • Polishing: a refining or finishing stage used with a suitable polish and pad to improve clarity and finish after preparation or correction.
  • Direct-thread head: a foam head with its own 14mm threaded mount that fits directly to a compatible M14 polisher.
  • Fast-fit sponge: a hook-and-loop polishing sponge that needs a compatible backing pad such as the Starchem BP-14.

There is no universal rule that a particular foam colour always means the same level of cut across every manufacturer. Use the product description and polishing-product instructions rather than relying on colour alone.

What is a compounding head?

A compounding head is intended for the corrective stage of machine polishing when used with a compatible compound and machine. In our range, the Starchem OSM-14P Orange Compounding Head is a 150mm foam head with a 14mm threaded mount.

Because the threaded centre is integrated into the head, it fits directly to a compatible M14 polishing machine rather than needing a separate hook-and-loop backing pad.

How much correction it produces will depend on the compound, paint system, machine speed, pressure and working method. Start conservatively and follow the compound and machine manufacturer's instructions.

What is a polishing head?

A polishing head is used for refining and finishing with a suitable polish. The Starchem SM-14P Black Polishing Head is a 150mm foam polishing head with an integrated 14mm threaded mount for compatible polishing machines.

Like the OSM-14P, it is a direct-thread accessory. That makes it a straightforward option when your polisher uses a compatible M14 spindle and you want to change complete heads rather than use a separate backing pad.

What is a waffle polishing sponge?

A waffle polishing sponge has a profiled foam face rather than a flat face. The shape allows the pad to flex over bodywork contours and provides a different working surface for polishing and finishing.

Kenrika currently stocks the Starchem SMV-WAFFLE Black 150mm polishing sponge and the Starchem GMV-WAFFLE White 150mm polishing sponge. Both are designed for use with a suitable backing pad and polishing system.

Do not assume that black, white or any other pad colour has a universal meaning across brands. Choose the pad from its stated purpose and match it to the polish or compound being used.

When do you need a backing pad?

Fast-fit waffle sponges need a backing pad. The Starchem BP-14 Fast-Fit Backing Pad is a 150mm backing pad with a 14mm threaded mount and a hook-and-loop face for compatible polishing and compounding pads.

The backing pad screws onto a compatible M14 machine, while the fast-fit sponge attaches to the hook-and-loop face. This lets you change compatible sponges without removing the threaded backing pad from the machine each time.

Threaded polishing head or backing-pad system?

Both systems can be useful, but they attach differently.

  • Threaded heads: the OSM-14P and SM-14P have their own 14mm threaded mounts and fit directly to a compatible machine.
  • Fast-fit sponges: the SMV-WAFFLE and GMV-WAFFLE attach to a compatible hook-and-loop backing pad such as the BP-14.

Before ordering, confirm the machine spindle thread, pad diameter and attachment system. A 150mm pad being the right diameter does not by itself guarantee compatibility.

What polisher can these accessories be used with?

Our current machine listing is the Starchem 1200W 7in Electric Polisher Kit, supplied with a UK 3-pin plug, carry case, lambswool bonnet, polishing heads and microfibre cloth. Check the machine's instructions for spindle thread, supported pad sizes and permitted speeds before pairing it with any accessory in this guide; the kit's 7in size does not by itself confirm compatibility with these 150mm heads.

Always confirm that any accessory is correctly mounted, compatible with the machine thread and rated for the intended machine speed before use.

A sensible compounding and polishing workflow

The exact process depends on the paintwork and the polishing products being used, but a cautious workflow is:

  1. Clean the surface thoroughly so dirt is not worked into the paint.
  2. Inspect the paint and decide whether correction is actually required.
  3. Choose the least aggressive suitable pad and product combination for the job.
  4. Test a small inconspicuous area before committing to a larger panel.
  5. Work within the machine, pad and polishing-product instructions.
  6. After any corrective stage, inspect the finish and move to a refining or polishing stage only if needed.
  7. Keep pads clean and replace or clean them when product build-up affects performance.

Machine polishing can remove or alter paint if used incorrectly. Excessive pressure, speed or heat can damage a finish, particularly around edges and sensitive areas, so controlled technique matters.

Does machine speed matter?

Yes. Machine speed is part of the polishing system, but there is no single correct RPM for every pad, product and paint surface. Check the machine’s available speed settings against the recommendations for the specific compound, polish and accessory being used.

Never exceed the accessory's rated speed and follow the instructions supplied with the machine and polishing product.

Safety when machine polishing

Check that pads and backing plates are securely fitted before starting. Use suitable eye and hearing protection, keep loose clothing and cables clear of rotating equipment and inspect pads for damage before use. Follow the tool manufacturer's instructions and the safety information supplied with compounds, polishes and coatings.
